I am proud of my family heritage as a first generation Chinese Canadian. Learning Mandarin and a bit of Cantonese inspired some of these works. Also family photos, hearing stories, sometimes just fragments when we look back and try to recover the past. The accordion book came out of learning about the Chinese experience in the 1880’s building BCs railroads and working on the west coast. This is just one story of many around the world of both loss and opportunity - migration and separation through generations has a ripple effect and impact on families and how we come to see ourselves.
